MISSION NAME: Lost Book on the Mountain MISSION RANK: C NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: One other OBJECTIVE: I'm a traveling merchant that just so happened to have made it into town the other day. The thing is one of my customers had specifically ordered a book from me and expects me to have it to them. The problem is that it seems I do not have the book on me. I know I did before I left the other town over! I must have dropped it when traveling through Mt. Hakobe. Could someone please find the book and return it to me? My reputation as a reliable merchant is on the line!
The specs of the mission was simple. The client lost something up in these mountains and due to the harsher climate they hired whoever they could to find it for them. Easy enough. Never mind the dangerous animals and whatever else that could possibly pose a threat. Irresponsible sure but honestly who was the thirteen year old girl to judge? Releasing a sigh which fogged up the crisp mountain air, the silver haired girl slowly began treading up the mountain. She didn’t tell her brother what she was up to of course. Didn’t want him to worry and she wanted to prove that she could be useful too. So here she was trying to find this lost item all alone.
Well, not all alone. Her canine companion Kaden was at her side sniffing around for any scent that resembled the client’s scent. As long as they didn’t run into any trouble Vyserya figured this would be a somewhat simple mission… if they didn’t run into any trouble. The thought of it had the girl adjusting her cloak hoping to bring her mind off of that probability.

So, some merchant guy lost his merchandise. A book. As he was told, there was nothing special about it. There probably was, but Kin couldn’t find it in himself to give any care to it. There was money involved, so why not go for it? That was what he told himself, until he realized the location. Mt.Hakobe. Motherfucking cold ass icy caves with a potential dragon in the depths. And as badly as it would be fun to whoop a dragon’s ass, or at least fuck with it a little, Kin was nowhere near ready for that. It would probably take a joint effort of his dragon slayer colleague, Vyse. But they were still too far away from being able to accomplish anything that great.
Someone else is out looking for this thing, he thought as he pulled his hood up and exhaled a frosty breath. Kawhi, the silver Exceed, sat on his shoulder, napping. Kin found the path the merchant took, and surely enough, there was someone up there. Her hair was long and straight, flowing due to that mountain breeze. “Oi, you’re other person looking for this merchant’s book, right?” He spoke to her from a couple yards away.

The sound of another voice spooked her as the girl's limbs stiffened. It was probably another person on the same job to try to find the book. It was not unheard of to hire several different people for the same task. Plus she should have known since, who in their right mind would trust such a task to a thirteen year old? Not as if she could not do it but most children her age could barely swat a fly. In any case, she did not particularly enjoy interacting with others but as courtesy she did turn her head slightly to make eye contact with the stranger. Kaden took notice of it too and turned to face the man. Rather than growl the wolf pup seemed to cautiously walk towards him and sniff the area which was curious. Vyserya knew that but put aside that thought for now.
"Yes. I am," she said briefly before she raised the hood from her red cloak over her head and hair. Then the pause. Oh, now what to do? What to say? She wasn't very good at this socializing... communication thing. Rather than making a fool of herself and say something else that may have seemed childish or stupid, she clammed up and didn't say anything else. The male did not look that much older than herself but that was even more reason not to bring attention to herself.

Once their eyes met, a weird tingle traveled down Kin's spine. That did not happen very often. Something about this girl made him feel annoyed for no reason. That went away when this wolf pup walked over and sniffed around. The boy actually thought it was the cutest thing and almost wanted it for himself. However, a blank expression remained on his face. The silent Exceed, Kawhi, was alerted by other presences and opened his eyes to see the dog-like animal. The silver kitten tilted its head to the right before he looked upon the young girl. She was definitely younger than Kin, but she had a magical essence to her. Kin didn't necessarily have to go out of his way to protect her, which was a big load off his mind. The last thing he wanted was for this to turn into an escort mission as well.
The lava kid continued walking up the path, getting closer and closer, until he walked right past her. "The name's Kin. You seem like the quiet type. Good." There he went again. For him, first impressions were important, so seeing as she only replied to his question, Kin labeled her as a quiet or cautious type. He could be wrong, but for the sake of the mission, he didn't have to care. His mismatched eyes scanned the land as they walked.

And this is why Vyserya doesn't like people. There was something about them... perhaps it was in their nature to be rude. Internally sighing as she watched the unknown male walk past her and making such a comment, she decided it was best not to be too hung over on it. It was not as if he said something like, 'you better not get in my way', or 'go home' so it was not so bad. Still he seemed to be the type that thought he could just do this mission himself and thought not much of her as a person also on the same mission. Then again, her brother probably would have thought the same if she was not involved. Didn't mean she didn't keep a mental note of it and his blank expression though.
Still something felt off. Part of her felt like she should have known what or recognized something familiar that did not belong with this one. That was a large doubt it was due to her devil slayer magic... perhaps it was her senses? Being raised by a dragon and having a dragon slayer brother kind of helped in that department. Nowhere near as good as them or even her little wolf pup but it was enough. Trying not to get too off track, the silver haired female snapped her fingers to get Kaden's attention and back on the original search for the book. Reluctant the pup's ears lowered slightly as if he had been scolded before returning to sniffing around the ground.
Now to return his courtesy right? "V-" suddenly she remembered that her brother usually went around saying weird names that weren't their own. Figured there was a good reason for that so why break that? "Vaesella," she replied curtly with enough of a lingual tempo so it did not sound as if she hesitated or tripped up her words.

There was something about her scent that was in the back of Kin's mind as he searched. He sifted through some bushes and found a few eggs of some animal behind it. The boy took note and brought the fact that there were bound to be some freaky beasts out here in this place. He sneezed due to the cold weather and sighed. "Fuck this weather." He looked up at the few birds in the sky and wondered if they would take it. How shiny was the cover of this book? The merchant made it sounds like it was gold, but that was probably an exaggeration. Still, looking at the birds told Kin that an animal could have taken it. Kawhi looked from above at nests to try to see if there was anything of a book in them in the nearby trees.
Vaesella? What a strange name, he thought when he heard it, but didn't bother to verbalize. Her wolf pup was definitely interesting and it seemed to have a good nose. Being raised by a dragon, Kin took a whiff of the merchant before he left so he could match the smell out here. He was coming up empty so far, but they hadn't been at it that long. So they continued onward until there was a rustling in the treetops above. "Did you hear that?"

At the sound of the sneeze the child bit her bottom lip as she held her arms together within themselves. The girl actually did not mind the cold weather. Actually she was used to it and she enjoyed it to some extent. Learning to live and thrive in the wild with no real home to speak of kinda does that to impressionable young kids. But even so she felt the need to huddle up in her clothes after hearing the other's words and viewing his actions. He seemed focused on the book but he's been mean so far. Mean likely was not the best descriptor but the young girl couldn't think of anything else off the top of her head.
Her crimson eyes did find themselves eyeing the flying cat thing above the trees. She heard about them from their other father and she was honestly shocked to find one here. Likely a partner to the male as Kaden had been her partner. Refraining from saying anything, it was not long after walking together that the trees began to shake. Vyserya immediately tugged at her hood to extend the shadow over her face, mostly due to instinct. "Yes..." she replied shortly, withholding a snappy comment that it was difficult to miss. Kaden on the other hand turned to the source of the sound and, as young and headstrong the small wolf was, exhausted a meek howl from his tiny jaws. It was mostly cute and certainly wasn't as intimidating as the wolf likely wanted it to be. Which was fine in Vyserya's mind as she did not want to be gathering too much attention to themselves.
Rather than acting brashly, unlike her brother might, she turned to see what the mystery man would do or come up with for this situation. It was not as if she could not defend herself yet most of the time everyone around her seemed to believe she needed to be 'protected'. That being said for one reason or another the girl found it unlikely that was to be the case here.

Kin stopped moving as his eyes followed the direction in which the wolf pup howled. Kawhi came flying back, having ran into the creature in the trees first. Out of the leaves, scurrying on a branch, stood a shrew that was five times bigger than a normal shrew, with its fat cylindrical body, slender legs, and claws that dug into the bark of the tree. It aggressively squeaked at them and looked with hungry eyes. Apparently, this creature had a crazy high-sped heartbeat and had to eat every hour to survive this terrain's unforgiving weather. Kin reached for his back and pulled out his compound bow. He reached again for a arrow to steady on the bow. He took in a deep breath and held it until the rat-like animal sprang out of the tree towards them.
Kin's eyes followed it as it came towards them. A mere few feet away from then was when he decided to let go of the wound up arrow. The patience he was taught when it came to hunting came in handy when it came to dealing with pesky animals. No matter how much time one spends growing up in nature, they will always find that not everything was looking to be a friend to them. As the arrow split the head of the shrew, it's body dropped where the momentum of the arrow took it. He removed the arrow that was now splattered with blood and flicked it around in the air to remove some of the residue. He put it back in his quiver and took a good whiff of the surroundings. He picked up something faint, and pointed to a direction. "This way" and he started to walk.
The thing about this girl bothered him again. The scent on her was unmistakable yet still hard to distinguish. What did it belong to? Or who? Kin knew other dragon slayers existed, but she didn't seem to be one. He only had one reference to go by, but with Vyse, it was clear to Kin's senses. It was a rare scent though, and that's probably what made Kin ask, almost absentmindedly, "Why do you smell like a dragon?"

The shrew didn't frighten her but it gave her something to keep her focus on. It was not as if the girl recoiled or shirked away in fear. If anything it probably would have shown that her nerves were greater than the average person. Wiggling her fingers beneath her cloak, she was prepared to execute some of her magic if need be. Then she saw what her temporary companion was doing. A bow and arrow. Crude but it saved her the trouble. Her crimson irises watched as the creature fell to her feet after being hit by the arrow and all she could do was shrug, unwavering from her stance.
After taking his own arrow her wolf began to move on from the ordeal as well. It pawed at Vyserya's ankle before nudging her in a certain direction. Strangely enough the male had gotten her attention and pointed in the the same area. Not even waiting for her to acknowledge it the girl shook her head mildly as she followed suit slowly. Eventually though the question was popped and catching wind of it only answered and confirmed thoughts in the Devil Slayer's mind. "Are you a dragon slayer or something?" Not even bothering to answer the question yet, she had already known the answer to her own.
Living with a dragon slayer for most of her life she had known the natural capabilities of one. What she couldn't deduce she read about in books about not only dragon slayers but other slayers as well. Being a Devil Slayer herself she did not have the naturally enhanced senses but she was sure with all the time she spent being raised by a dragon and spending time with her brother, the scent of a dragon might have lingered on her. Only a dragon slayer would be able to distinguish that. An animal might be able to however they likely wouldn't have known what a dragon smelled like. This was the only plausible answer. "There's no way you could smell that on me if you weren't one yourself."

"Of course I'm one" Kin couldn't believe that she didn't know this. He wasn't trying to hide it. Wait, she couldn't smell the fact that he was a dragon slayer as well? That possibility did not exist for someone who thought everyone who had the smell could detect his as he could theirs. Her presence was an anomaly to him. "The question that remains is, what exactly are you?" He stepped back from this younger girl, definitely feeling uneasy though his face remained stoic. The air around them was cool but stagnant for the moment. Kin couldn't bring himself to continue without some kind of explanation for her smell. Could this girl have possibly killed a dragon? It didn't seem like she would be at all capable of that, but she could have just been that good. There were other possibilities that could've rendered this girl in contact with a dragon, but dragon's aren't exactly friendly types. In fact, for every slayer that existed, there were a hundred people that were killed by dragons.

Of course, huh? Vyserya had the urge to roll her eyes at that response but she did not. There was no initial way for her to know that. Then again that told her a few things. Kin, as he called himself, probably didn't have much interaction with anyone that was not a dragon slayer. It was a mix of surprising and expected but that was aside from the point. It was not as if she had much room to talk about those types of things for she herself didn't enjoy interacting with other people. The most interaction she has had was with her dragon slayer brother and the dragon that raised them both. Before she was to answer the strangely worded question however the male took a step back. His face remained the same but that action indicated some caution and that was... amusing.
"That's rude," she commented under her breath, squinting from below her hood. He appeared to have some sort of misconception or something about her. It was not as if the girl was trying to hide the fact she said that. At the same time she did take her time answering the question itself, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. "I'm human but I'm no dragon slayer." There was no need to mention that she was a Slayer at all, much less a devil slayer. Even her dragon father used to tell her to keep that under wraps if she could before he disappeared. "As for why I have a scent of a dragon..." How to word this? She was raised by one? Her brother and herself were trained by one? Her brother is a dragon slayer? "I knew one once when I was younger." Wait, why was she even bothering? Vyserya had no reason to explain herself to a stranger. "What does it matter?"

Kin heard the comment she made under her breath and paid it no mind. Rude. When you hear something often enough, it doesn't have any real potency. She said she was human, so that made her neutral again. She didn't smell like a nasty demon or anything. Then, Vaesella said it. Actually, for a thirteen year old to say 'when I was younger,' it was a bit iffy. But this meant she was a little kid when she knew one. One doesn't simply know a dragon either. For the dragon to have accepted her enough to have not eaten her was crazy. And if she wasn't a dragon slayer, she must have had a different path from the beginning that she was blessed with dragon slayer magic knowledge from the dragon she knew.
It was at that moment that Kin fell into a bit of nostalgia and Vaesella turned into a positive. Stepping out of usual character, he had a small smile on his face "They're great, aren't they? They can be totally lazy and pushy but they're so strong when they're angry! But they're such jokers too" Kin loved talking up dragons to people who knew them, which had only been one other person up until now. He was about to say something else, but he realized he had subconsciously moved back to her. He hated getting carried away. He was taught better than that. "Uh, so this book tho" he returned to his normal stoic self as he looked at the tree behind her then continued forward.

"..." he didn't answer. Went on about how great dragons are, or his perception of them. All dragons were different and since he was going on about them in such a way, Kin must have been like her brother and trained by one personally. "I don't remember seeing an angry dragon before," she murmured to herself again. The dragon Vyserya knew was never particularly angry from what she remembered. Lazy wasn't a good word to describe him either. Pushy maybe but joker...
The silver haired girl shrugged it off. This guy was showing a different side of himself at the mention of dragons and while she was no dragon slayer herself, she could understand the enthusiasm. Plus he seemed to take her word for whatever she said and was able to move on from the topic. She was grateful for that at least. "You hinted at the fact you had a lead before you stopped," she would say as he mentioned the book again. He moved past her and then all of a sudden it was back to square one. So exhausting.

"Hope that you never do" he said. Kin remembered and the smell came back to him. He turned back around and Kawhi flew in the direction he walked in. They moved through the cold terrain and some strange noises were heard. As they moved closer and the occasional grumbles grew more audible, Kin looked to Vaesella. She seemed smart enough to understand they had to proceed with some caution. Kin stepped lighter and his eye caught the appearance of three figures.
Kin implored Vaesella to stay hidden behind a tree as he did so himself. They didn't seem to notice them yet. Vulcans. Since they were on this mountain, they were the type that were physically strong but no so smart. Still, the dragon slayer smelled that musty old merchant's merchandise coming from their direction. He caught a glimpse of the book in the biggest one's hand. They were about the size of a grown man, these primate-like creatures, and they didn't seem friendly. Normally, Kin would have already had a plan with Vyse that would be the most effective way to get that book.
But this girl. What does she even do? Kin was a little frustrated at his ignorance, and that's why he wasn't the social type. Fuck. He exhaled a cool wisp and looked at her. "So, how should we go about this?" He wanted to give her the reigns. Kin could probably take them all on in a physical battle, but that seemed like a drain. So maybe this girl had some convenient psychokinesis magic or something. They'd be able to grab it without move and run outta there.
