MISSION NAME. House on Haunted Hill. MISSION RANK. C-Class. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS. 1. OBJECTIVE. Please, my daughter is a scientist who got invited to this mansion and hasn’t come home yet. It’s been over a week and I’ve heard nothing. Please find out what happened to her, I’ve heard terrible things about this place. Meet me for details first.
Jaeger, having looked into the abyss that was his wallet and finding only moths and deep sadness, took to the job board in search of work. Most of the work available didn’t really suit him. Fishing for wingfish, helping a man find his dog, recovering a stolen pendant - all of these were important jobs, but were better left for novice wizards just coming on to the scene and cutting their teeth on simple tasks. Jaeger needed more excitement, more intrigue…
More haunted fucking mansion. Hell yes. He snatched the job request off the board and read it more closely. A man’s daughter had been invited to a creepy mansion and not yet returned. The client suspected something fishy was going on at the mansion, having heard terrible rumors. The name of the mission implied that there was some sort of haunting involved. Jaeger wondered if he’d be able to fight a ghost, and if so, if he’d be able to Take Over its form. He was thoroughly sold on the job, but needed a partner in order to take it. Thankfully, he’d recently made a new friend.
He got on his motorcycle and took off for Magnolia Town, the usual haunt of his friend Rialle Waters. She lived in the area and attended some strange church there. He also knew that there was a particular bistro she was fond of in Magnolia Town. Being the kind of guy he was, Jaeger decided to start at the bistro - who didn’t love food, after all?!
Jaeger pulled up in front of the bistro, parking the motorcycle on the side of the road and securing it against any weirdo thieves that might try to nick it. Seeing his friend through the window, he strode inside quickly. Poogie was still trying to get his helmet off.
“Rialle,” he said, pulling a chair up to the table at which the half-mermaid woman sat, “Great to see you again, fancy meeting you here, mind if I have a seat?”
He reached over to an empty table, nabbing up an empty water glass and setting it down in front of himself. Reaching into his pocket, he produced two eggs, which he promptly cracked into the glass and drank without hesitation.
“You interested in making some money?”

Wiping the raw egg whites from his lips and chin, Jaeger let out a satisfied sigh. Eggs really were nature's candy. But with protein. And not really all that sweet but they were perfectly gooey and had a certain rich flavor to them that just always hit the spot. They were also pretty easy to get if you didn't care what kind of bird they came from.
"I'm good. Broke. You?"
He rummaged in his pocket for the job flyer, which he'd folded and put away so as not to lose it. After a moment he found it, produced it, unfolded it, and slammed it down on the table in front of Rialle. He grinned widely, giving her a chance to read it. In the meantime, Poogie pushed his way past the door with a great deal of effort, and then started to search for his friends. Really, it was just like Jaeger to leave him to find his own way. The little pig decided he would give the wizard a piece of his mind, once he found him.
"Looks like theres some fishy shit goin on at this mansion," Jaeger said, missing the irony of his phrasing considering the company he was in, "Might be there's some ghosts. You down for a good old fashioned ghost hunt?"

"Alright!" Jaeger said explosively, pounding his fist down on the table. He was very excited that Rialle decided to join up with him. Until recently, he'd been cherry picking one-man missions because he didn't have any friends that were in the area or consistently easy to reach. Rialle, however, wasn't like him - she wasn't a dirty vagrant, and she actually had a home to go back to. That made her easy to find. "That's what I'm talkin' about!" He reached into his pocket and pulled out another egg, which he promptly popped into his mouth, shell and all.
He followed Rialle out of the restaurant, Poogie and his bestest friend Hoku hot on his heels. Hoku had climbed up on Poogie's back and was now riding him like a mighty steed. A mighty LAZY steed, but mighty nonetheless.
"So, do you mind riding on the back of my bike? I've got an extra helmet, so it's plenty safe. It's probably the fastest way to get there, and we don't want to waste any time rescuing this poor girl, am I right?"
He threw his leg over his motorcycle, settling into the seat. He reached into one of the two saddle bags that adorned the vehicle and produced a pink helmet that said "FOR LADIES" on it. He held it out to her as he placed his own helmet, which was black and said "BEAST" on it, on his head.

Jaeger watched as Hoku carried her away. It appeared this bunny was stronger than he looked, which was interesting to say the least. He shrugged, not one to force her to ride with him as long as Hoku could keep up. Poogie climbed up onto Jaeger's lap, and Jaeger forced a little black helmet onto the pig's head that sported the word WILD. With a happy and affirmative "Rrnk!" to indicate that he was ready to ride, Jaeger gave the little pig a thumbs up and kicked the engine to life.
"Try to keep up, okay?" he said to Rialle teasingly, and took off down the road at an alarming and frankly unsafe speed.
The mansion in question wasn't that far away, all things considered. It was an old, abandoned place tucked into the East Forest just outside of Magnolia town, though it was bit too far to walk. Jaeger weaved between trees and jumped overgrown roots and bushes for as long as he could before he finally had to bring the motorcycle to a stop. The mansion was just barely visible through the trees about a hundred yards away or so, and was surrounded by dense underbrush. They would have to proceed on foot.
"Looks like we can't ride any further. Probably for the best, just in case. We might not want to announce our presence on this one."

By the time he realized Rialle was no longer with him, it was far, far too late. Jaeger scratched the back of his head. Maybe she'd gotten lost in the woods or something? Maybe she'd stopped to pee? He couldn't figure it out. He looked down at Poogie, who was giving him a very familiar face. It was the 'you've forgotten something you big idiot but I don't speak words so I can't tell you how badly you've fucked up oh my god why do I hang out with you' face.
Jaeger took off his helmet and set it down on the seat of his motorcycle. He took out his switchblade comb and began to fix his hair, getting it back into that perfect shape and shine. One day he'd buy a motorcycle helmet that could properly accommodate his hairstyle, but he'd need a bit more money for that. All the while, he tried to remember what the hell it was that he'd forgotten. Had Rialle told him she'd needed to run an errand first? No, that couldn't be it. He definitely hadn't left the stove on because he didn't have a stove to leave on. He was wearing underpants that day...
"Shit. We were supposed to talk to the job poster first." Poogie let out an affirmative "Rrnk!" in response to Jaeger's realization. He considered getting back on the bike, but if he knew Rialle she'd already be there talking to the client. If he left now he'd probably miss her and further complicate the situation. No, best to wait here and keep an eye on the mansion, see if anything strange happened. So, Jaeger got down on the ground and crawled through the brush, finding a good spot to observe, but remain hidden until Rialle arrived. In the meantime, Poogie took a little nap on the motorcycle.

As Rialle settled in under the bushes next to Jaeger, he nodded towards the house. She’d arrived just in time to see a rather suspicious figure approaching the mansion, dressed in a long black coat and a wide-brimmed black hat, wearing a white mask that resembled a bird’s skull. They were carrying a leather doctor’s bag in one hand, and an ornate brass key in the other. Jaeger held up one finger to gently quiet Rialle. The strange-looking “doctor” slid the key into the front door, turned the lock, and went inside. Oddly enough, they neglected to close the door behind them.
“Nothing much until just now. A few odd lights in some of the windows, always a weird color. Some rumbling noises. No sign of Madison. Nothing particularly ghastly until whoever the hell that was.”
He slowly and carefully pulled himself out of the bushes, standing up and brushing himself off quietly. Looking left, then right, he started towards the door with haste. The front yard of the mansion was overgrown, but not so much so that a grown man could effectively hide in it, so he decided the best plan was to just make a beeline for the door and hope nobody was looking out the window. Once he was at the front steps of the house, he paused. Turning back to Rialle, he motioned for her to follow if she hadn’t already, and then removed his boots. They were heavy and hard-soled, and would make it impossible to get around inside a creaky old building without alerting everyone inside.

When Rialle caught up to him, Jaeger took off his sunglasses, tucking them away in the inside pocket of his jacket. From another, lower pocket he produced a completely different pair of sunglasses. Where the frames for his normal shades were a polished brass with black lenses, this pair had black laquered frames with bright mirrored lenses. He slid them onto his face, and could suddenly see as if the sun were high in the sky with no trees to block it. He’d need these inside this creepy-ass house, most likely.
“I’m sorry, were you saying something? I was kind of laser-focused there for a minute. In the zone. You know how it is. Now come on, before someone else comes along and spots us!”
Jaeger turned and went up the stairs and into the house, his now-bare feet making much less noise than they would have with his heavy boots. As he crossed the threshold into the foyer, he began walking much more carefully, leaning forward and looking both ways before making any moves.
The inside of the house was much darker than the time of day outside would have promised. It seemed that the windows were blocked from the inside, as if whoever was here didn’t want any sunlight. There was also an eerie feeling, and Jaeger could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. The beak-masked figure was nowhere in sight, and there were four distinct paths the two wizards could take - a room to the left which emanated an odd green glow, a room to the right from which an odd humming noise was emanating, a hallway straight ahead that appeared to lead to a dimly-lit kitchen, and a flight of stairs that went up, and up, and up to the second floor of the house. The second floor was unremarkable by comparison to the other options, which only made Jaeger more curious and more unnerved. He looked to Rialle and raised his eyebrows.
“Where to?” he whispered.

Jaeger had been afraid that she'd go for the stairs leading down - he'd been actively ignoring the obvious fifth path. Basements in normal houses freaked him out, and he could only imagine how awfully creepy the basement in a place like this would be! Still, this was a team effort and he'd asked Rialle for her input, so when she headed down the stairs, Jaeger followed.
The steps themselves were well-constructed and solid, but still creaked like there was no tomorrow. The banister was carved wood, the finish worn down with age. Once they had cleared the cieling, Jaeger hopped the bannister and landed on the basement floor below. He figured this would keep them from being bottlenecked on the staircase itself, as well as give them more tactical positioning options.
The basement was dark, lit only by dim candlelight and the phosphorescent glow of strange liquids in beakers and vials adorning a long steel table. A faint bubbling noise echoed off the stone walls. If it weren't for his Reverse Sunglasses, Jaeger would have a tough time seeing with any detail, but wearing them allowed him to spot the beak-masked figure from earlier off on the other side of the room. They were pouring a bright purple liquid from one beaker into another beaker with a dark blue liquid. If they'd noticed Jaeger and Rialle come in, they hadn't shown it.
Jaeger began to move quietly across the floor, moving into a flanking position with Rialle. With any luck, this would go over way more peacefully than he expected.

"Madison? Isn't that the girl we're looking for?"
Jaeger folded his arms, looking at the masked scientist. He would never have guessed that this was Madison, but he'd also learned not to doubt Rialle's senses. They were truly uncanny and he was more than a little jealous. He strode over to the scientist, reached over the lab table, and pulled the mask from her face.
Beneath the mask was indeed a young woman. Bookish, sort of mousey, with sensible but still sort of nerdy glasses on. Her hair was cut short, and she looked somewhere between ashamed and frustrated. Like someone who got interrupted doing something very important that they knew they should not be doing.
"Well I'll be damned. What's with the getup? Your parents are super worried, you know."
"I know," she replied, "But the work I'm doing here is very important. I've been given the opportunity to revolutionize the scientific arts as we know them!"
Jaeger looked at Rialle, then back at Madison. Something didn't feel right. The hair on the back of his neck was standing on end, and his heart raced. Then he heard it - the thump, thump, thump of heavy footfalls slowly making their way across the floor above. Too heavy for a person to be making.

Jaeger raised an eyebrow at Madison as he tossed her mask casually off to one side. He didn't like the tone she'd taken with Rialle, and the statement she'd made was more than a little bit confrontational. He could tell Rialle was a bit riled up. He wasn't sure what had gotten her hackles raised, but he couldn't blame her regardless. Even Jaeger, a dirty vagrant, had gone back home to visit Geen and his gramps over the years, and had always left with a tearful - yet masculine - goodbye.
"Listen, kid. Your parents are worried sick about you. They think you're here against your will, that some nutcase has taken you hostage or you're possessed by a demon or something. They just want some peace of mind."
"Let them worry. They're content to be insignificant, just a simple merchant and his wife living day-to-day and never making the world better. What I'm doing here - what I've DONE here - it's magnificent! The world will never be the same after what I've done!"
As the thump, thump, thump of slow and heavy footsteps drew closer to the stairs, Jaeger slid his hands into his pockets to put on his brass knuckles. If there was going to be a fight, he wanted to be at least somewhat prepared. He looked towards the stairs, keeping only a peripheral eye on Madison.
"What exactly have you done here, Madison?"
"I've reanimated the dead."

Jaeger scrunched up his face. You didn't need to be a Dragon Slayer to smell whatever horror was trudging its way down the stairs. It didn't just smell like rotten flesh. It had a certain chemical bite to it that burned at Jaeger's nose hairs and made his throat sting. Whatever Madison had done, she'd made a grave mistake. Jaeger hopped over her lab table and looked her dead in the eyes.
"You've fucked up, and now we have to clean up your mess. Try to think about that when you get home."
Jaeger punched the girl in the stomach, and hard. Madison doubled over, the wind knocked out of her as she tumbled to the floor. He didn't care if he'd knocked her out or not, she wasn't going to be a problem for now. Jaeger turned and made his way for the stairs, thick brown fur growing from his forearms and feet, the nails turning to sharp claws. Meanwhile, the creature came into view. Its skin was mottled and grey, falling off in places. It had been stitched together clumsily, and a bright green liquid oozed from its open sores.
"Rialle, I'm going to get this thing out of the way. Get Madison out of here. If I'm not right on your heels, leave her with Poogie and come back to save my life because I don't want to die down here fighting whatever the hell this thing is."
Jaeger bum rushed the monster, grabbing it with his Wolfen hands and trying not to vomit at the cold slimyness of its flesh. He pulled it into a firm bear hug and bent backwards, suplexing it over the banister and tumbling with it to the concrete floor below. ________________

Jaeger watched as Rialle's water dragon slayer magic slammed into the beast, ripping away bits of its awful flesh as he fell to the ground with it. As the two impacted to the basement floor and Hoku hightailed it out of there with Madison, Jaeger rolled off of the creature. He'd heard a few bones snap when they landed, and hoped that would spell the end.
He wasn't so lucky. The monster stood, swinging up with one of it's huge grey arms and nailing Jaeger under the chin. He reeled back, almost toppling over from the impact. Somehow his reverse sunglasses neither broke nor came off his face. Lucky! Jaeger spit out a tooth, and, head swimming, leapt in at the beast raking away at the rotten body with his claws as he let an unholy sound echo from within his throat. He wanted to make this fight as quick as possible.

When Rialle came in with her sword, Jaeger took a moment to step back and circle around the creature. He figured they could get a better advantage over the thing if they had it flanked. As the eye popped, Jaeger fought back a powerful gag as more of that green ichor spilled out from its now-vacant eye socket. Whatever Madison had done, it wasn't natural at all.
Then Rialle was suddenly on the other side of the room, the stitched-together golem thrashing about wildly in a blind, mindless fury. She hit the far wall so hard that it cracked, and Jaeger felt something within him crack with it. Jaeger didn't have a lot of friends, and even less of them were are welcoming and accepting as Rialle had been in the short time he'd known her. When a friend was in danger, it got Jaeger heated, but that was nothing compared to when a friend was genuinely hurt. He couldn't tell the extent of her injuries, but it didn't look great from where he stood, and for a brief moment, Jaeger lost it.
It was in that moment that a little sliver of the Wolfen's murderous instinct slipped into his mind, and as without thinking he was on the creature's back, digging in the claws on his feet into the thing's back as he raked and clawed at its neck and shoulders. It reached back and grabbed him by the waist, pulling at him in an attempt to toss him away, but the effort just made Jaeger dig his claws in deeper to keep his hold on the thing.
"NOBODY," Jaeger said, grabbing the monster by the sides of the head.
"HURTS," He said, digging his claws in to get a good grip.
"MY," He screamed, pulling up, hard.
"PACK!!!" He cried as the monster's head tore from its shoulders, green ichor coating the Jaeger's face and chest, and painting the room.
As the monster collapsed to the ground, Jaeger remained standing on top of it. His claws were still embedded in its back, and he held its head firmly in his hands. His breathing was ragged and labored, and bruises started to show on his face and chest.

For a long couple of minutes, all Jaeger could hear was the sound of his own raging heart. He'd killed the abominable corpse man - or at least, broke it badly enough that it was dead again - but the adrenaline still surged through him. Rialle had said something to him, some expression of gratitude before heading up the stairs and out of the house. His senses were on fire, even moreso than usual with the Wolfen's strength active within him. He looked at the head in his hands, and actively willed himself to drop it. It his the ground with a dull thud before rolling away into the darkness. Jaeger pushed his reverse sunglasses up off of his eyes and onto his forehead. The lenses were smeared with that vile green mess. He couldn't see through them anymore.
As he caught his breath, he closed his eyes. He pushed the Wolfen's mind back into his own subconscious, ignoring its pleading cries to run off into the forest, to hunt and to kill and to eat. His arms and legs returned to normal. His socks had been destroyed. He gave the motionless corpse one more kick for good measure before heading out of the basement. On his way to the door, he paused. In one of the side rooms was a great vat of that green liquid that had been bleeding out of the thing he'd just put down. He couldn't allow this to fall into the wrong hands. He returned to the basement, retrieving one of Madison's burners from her lab table. Using the flame to set the curtains, carpets, and some of the walls alight, Jaeger made sure this place wouldn't trouble the world any further.
As he made his way across the lawn and to his friends - pausing only to grab his boots -the house went up in flames behind him. He gave Madison a hard look.
"Let's get the Professor here back to her parents so we can get paid and grab a real meal. I'm gonna need to dry clean my jacket, too."
Throwing his leg over his motorcycle, he planted his own helmet on his head, Poogie's helmet on his little pink head, and held the FOR LADIES helmet out to Rialle to put on Madison's head.

Jaeger grimaced when Rialle mentioned a shower. She was right. He needed one DESPERATELY. Still, it would have to wait until Madison was safely returned to her family. As Rialle took off towards the client's home, Jaeger turned to give one last look at the girl.
"Try to escape and I'll break your fucking legs."
He kicked the engine on and with a mighty mechanical roar, drove his motorcycle out of the forest and back onto the streets of Magnolia. The wind on his face felt nice, and helped him regain his center. He didn't like going overboard like he had today, it made him hungry and nauseous all at once. Still, it was something that had needed to be done and he refused to feel bad about it. Behind him, Madison squirmed uncomfortably. In his lap, Poogie napped peacefully.
As he pulled up to the house, he pulled the helmet off his head and looked at Rialle.
"It's probably best if you handle this part. We should spare her parents the sight of me, all things considered. I trust that you can give them a good story that lets them preserve their image of their precious daughter."
